What we collect when you apply to Ije, why, and what rights you have over it.

Privacy Policy of Ije

1. About this policy. “Ije” is a service operated by Raba Technologies, a business name registered in Nigeria under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 (BN 3327509). In this policy “we,” “us,” and “our” mean Raba Technologies, which is the data controller for the information described here. Our contact for anything to do with privacy is hello@ije.life.

This policy explains what we collect when you apply to Ije, why, what we do with it, and what rights you have over it. It applies whether or not you are later matched or invited to a dinner.

2. What we collect. When you apply, we collect your name, your WhatsApp number (which identifies your record and is the only way we contact you), your email address if you choose to give it, your age band, how you identify, the part of Lagos you spend most of your time in, your industry if you tell us, and your answers to our questions about your personality, social preferences, what you are hoping to get out of the experience, your comfortable spending range, whether you drink, any dietary needs, and your view on the ₦10,000 curation fee.

Several of these questions are open text boxes. We ask them so our curators can build tables that work, not to collect anything specific, but people sometimes tell us more than we asked for. Section 4 explains how we treat that.

3. Information we create about you. Beyond what you tell us directly, our matching process generates additional information about you: a short set of topic tags describing your interests, generated on our own systems; if we ever use an outside service to generate them we will say so here before we do; notes on how well a proposed table of six is likely to work; a record of who you have already been seated with, so we never repeat a table; your status in our process (applied, invited, paid, attended, no-show, or declined); and any notes a curator writes about you. We treat all of this as your personal data in the same way as the information you gave us directly.

4. Sensitive information you choose to share. Some of our questions are open text, and honest answers can reveal things the law treats as sensitive, including your health, your religious or philosophical views, or matters touching on your sexual life. We do not ask for this directly, and you are never required to give it. If you choose to share it, you are consenting to our processing it for the same purpose as the rest of your application, building a table that suits you. You can ask us to remove any specific disclosure of this kind at any time by writing to hello@ije.life, without affecting the rest of your application.

5. Why we use your information, and on what basis. We use your application to assess whether we can build a table around you. Up to that point, we rely on your consent, given when you submit the form. Once you are matched, invited, and the ₦10,000 fee becomes payable, we rely on the fact that processing your information is necessary to deliver the dinner you have signed up for. We use your WhatsApp number to reach you on the same basis. We keep a record of who you have dined with so a returning guest is never seated with the same people twice, which we also treat as necessary to provide the service properly.

6. Who sees your information. Your application is reviewed by our curators, who use it to build tables. At the dinner itself, your name is not shared with the other five guests beforehand; introductions are made by our creative director, and we use conversation cards rather than name tags or biographies. Your industry, interests, and comfortable spend may be used, in general terms only, to help a curator decide who belongs at your table, without disclosing your identity to them in advance.

7. Service providers. We use Tally to run our application form and Meta’s WhatsApp Cloud API to message you. Both process your information on our instructions and only for that purpose. Because both are based outside Nigeria, using them involves transferring your information abroad. We rely on your consent to this transfer, given when you submit the form, together with the contractual terms each provider operates under for handling personal data.

8. Marketing and photographs. We may use photographs from our dinners for marketing, but only images that do not show your face, unless you have separately and expressly told us we can use one that does. The same rule applies to any future photography at our events.

9. Keeping your information. If you are not matched, we keep your application for as long as you remain a candidate for a table. If we have not placed you within twelve months, we will check whether you would like to remain in our pool; if we do not hear back, we delete your record after eighteen months of inactivity. If you attend a dinner, we keep your record, including your encounter history, on the same basis, so we can continue to avoid repeat introductions if you apply again.

10. Children. Ije is for adults. Our form does not accept anyone below our stated age bands, the youngest of which begins at 21, and by applying you confirm you meet that requirement. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 21, and if we learn that we have, we will delete it.

11. Your rights. Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, you can ask us for a copy of what we hold on you, correct anything that is wrong, delete your information, restrict or object to how we use it, and receive your data in a portable format. You can withdraw any consent you have given at any time, either by writing to us or by replying STOP to any of our WhatsApp messages, though this may mean we can no longer consider you for a table. You can also complain directly to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission if you believe we have not handled your information properly. To exercise any of these rights, write to hello@ije.life.

12. Keeping your information secure. We limit access to your information to the small number of people who need it to run our matching process, we do not sell it or share it for anyone else’s marketing, and we review how it is stored as we grow.

13. Changes to this policy. We may update this policy as Ije grows. If we make a material change, we will post the update here and change the date below.

14. Contact us. Write to hello@ije.life with anything to do with your privacy or this policy.
